Here’s a sneak peek into the process that goes behind ONS. Sometimes you come across a comic that just begs to be altered, but the question arises, which peanut do you remove? Sometimes difficult decisions must be made in the name of comedy…

So here’s a look at the process.

First, I scour the archives at comics.com for a suitable strip.  The key is to find one that has at least two characters who don’t address each other directly by name.

Here’s an original:

This is a prime example. This is a prime example.

Then I load the image in The Gimp where I decide which character to remove.  I use the clone, paintbrush, and eraser tools to carefully paint out one character and his/her dialogue.  When I post the image, I also add a caption, hopefully to comedic effect.

Sometimes, it’s a difficult decision which character should be removed.  It’s amazing the difference in tone a strip can have based on this decision.   Observe:

Minus Lucy:

Observe the exuberence with which Linus celebrates the weather!Notice the exuberance with which Linus celebrates the weather!

And now, Minus Linus:

Such a bizarre and random moment of overt self-confidence, Lucy.Such a bizarre and random moment of overt self confidence, Lucy.

If I might be so bold as to eschew all sense of humility, I’d also like to point out the work I did on the tree in pane 2 of the “Minus Linus” strip.  I had to completely fabricate the top half of that tree, and hopefully, it is close enough to the delightful Mr. Schulz’s work that it goes relatively unnoticed.

So there you have it– an inside look at the creation of “One Nut Shy.”  Be sure and share it with all your friends.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

    very nice

if you hadn’t mentioned it, I don’t think anyone would have noticed the tree

at last, you get to release your inner “happy trees”….. 🙂
